Summary

The IEA's International Education Research Institute (IERI) is organizing a three-day Academy on conducting secondary analysis using international large-scale assessment databases from IEA (TIMSS, PIRLS, ICILS and ICCS) and OECD (PISA) school based studies.

This is a great opportunity for those looking to learn to use the most recently released database from these studies.

The general day-to-day schedule of the academy will include both presentations and hands-on practical assignments using public releases of these databases.

Participation in the Academies will be limited to the first 25 registrants. Participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The goals of this Academy are to:

- Familiarize participants with the statistical complexities involved in working with and analyzing international large-scale assessment databases.

- Familiarize participants with the data structure of TIMSS, PIRLS, ICCS, ICILS and PISA.

- Familiarize participants with software currently available to take into account statistical and data complexities of these databases.

- Prepare users to take into account the statistical complexities and complex data structure when using the databases with commercially available software.

The Academy will provide an overview of the structure and contents of these databases, as well as an overview of the main design features of these surveys that are relevant for the analysis of their data.

The topics covered will be the following:

- Overview of the surveys and available data

- Review of the background questionnaires

- Sampling and design issues and implications for the analysis

- Overview of sampling

- Sampling variance estimation

- Assessment design

- Principles of item response theory

- Principles of multiple imputations

- Estimating sampling variance

- Using the IDB Analyzer to analyze international large-scale assessment data

- The Convert Module

- The Merge Module

- The Analysis Module

- Using the International Data Explorer

- Calculating standard errors with complex designs

- Working with independent and dependent samples

- Working with composite statistics

- Combining variables, creating and validating indices

The general day-to-day schedule will include both presentations and hands-on practical assignments. During the last day of the Academy, participants will be expected to make a presentation outlining a research project that makes use of one of the international large-scale assessment databases, and present preliminary results obtained during the Academy.

Requirements

Participants in the Academy are expected to have working knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics and analysis. Participants must also bring their own laptop computer with wireless Internet access capabilities and Internet browser.

Hands-on exercises will be carried out using the IEA's IDB Analyzer and the International Data Explorer.

The latest version of the IEA's IDB Analyzer software will be distributed to the participants prior to the Academy. The IDB Analyzer requires a Windows environment to run, and a compatible Statistical software such as R, SPSS or SAS.

The International Data Explorer is a web-based application that requires internet access and an internet browser. A version of MS Excel, MS Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader is needed to view export files generated by these programs.

While other statistical programs can be used for the analysis, support for programs other than the International Data Explorer and the IDB Analyzer will be limited.

Complete documentation and publicly available databases will be distributed during the Academy.

About the IERI Academies

The IERI Academies are training workshops sponsored by the IEA International Research Institute. Their goals are to train participants in the methods and procedures of large-scale assessments, and to foster networking and collaboration among researchers and practitioners around the world.

The Academies have regularly taken place at least twice per year, every year since their inception in 2007.

The Academies are also offered in Spanish, and can be scheduled upon request.

Since 2007, IERI has conducted the Academies on topics such as the use of international large-scale assessment databases for secondary analysis, item response theory and population modeling in large-scale assessments, use of hierarchical linear models in large-scale assessments, sampling methods in large-scale assessments, among others. A list of previous Academies can be found on our website: IERI Institute.

About IERI

The International Educational Research Institute (IERI) is sponsored and funded by the IEA, and focuses on improving the science of large-scale assessments. IERI undertakes activities around three broad areas of work that include:

- Research studies related to the development and implementation of large-scale assessments;

- Professional development and training; and

- Dissemination of research findings and information gathered through large-scale assessments.

IERI supports research activities that address issues related to large-scale assessments such as TIMSS, PIRLS, ICCS, ICILS, PISA, PIAAC, NAEP, IALS, ALL, etc. The label “virtual” is attached to the research area to emphasize that the research projects are hosted by the funding institutions, but are facilitated by online collaboration as well as by the shared joint expertise of researchers involved in work on large-scale assessments.

The aim of this virtual research area is to contribute to the science of large-scale assessments so that the best available information is provided to policy makers and researchers from around the world.

Publishing your Work

Since 2008, IERI has supported the publication of research work on issues related to large-scale assessments. Much of this work has come from participants in the IERI Academies.

IERI sponsors the Large-scale Assessments in Education journal. In order to be published in this journal, submissions have to undergo and receive favorable technical, substantive, and editorial review.

For information on how to submit a paper for review and publication in the IERI journal please visit the journal website at: www.largescaleassessmentsineducation.com.
